Number 257 in “The War Library: Original Stories of Adventure in the War for the Union,” a series of dime novels that are set in the midst of actual Civil War battles.

The Old Knapsack; or, Longstreet’s Mad Charge at Knoxville is half war story—about the Siege of Knoxville in November of 1863 by Confederate forces under Lt. Gen. James Longstreet as he tried to take Knoxville from Union forces under Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside before Grant could finish off Bragg at Chattanooga and send reinforcements—and the other half tragic romance with a weird twist.

The credited author, “Marline Manly,” is one of the pseudonyms of St George Henry Rathborne (1854–1938), who was born and raised in northern Kentucky.
