Originally published in 1902, this collection of reprinted fictional sea stories published at various earlier dates during the 19th century—an eponymously titled novella, a shorter novelette, and two short stories that might be factually based—is entirely placed in the Pacific Ocean, mostly in the islands of the western Pacific.  Taking place during the tail-end of the Age of Sail, these tales are written from the perspective of private traders, pirates, and native islanders, and reflect the Australian-born author’s experiences gained from a life spent bouncing around the Pacific himself.

“The Jalasco Brig:” a novella about romance, piracy, murder, and one man’s effort to regain his reputation.

“‘Hope:’ A Memory of ‘Bully’ Hayes:” a short story, possibly fact-based, about a notorious American blackbirder’s affection for a young native boy.

“Collison’s Treasure Trove:” also possibly fact-based, a story about a decent man whose good deed leads him to hidden pirate treasure.

“‘Fighting’ Whales:” stories about angry whales that attacked ships and men.
