Number 67 in “The War Library: Original Stories of Adventure in the War for the Union,” a series of dime novels that are set in the midst of actual Civil War battles.
In For The War; or, The Forts of the Mississippi: A Romance of Thrilling Adventure Afloat and Ashore is about a Union spy sent down the Confederate-controlled Mississippi River with critical communications for Admiral Farragut from General Grant, and then sent back up the same river with communications from Farragut to Grant. The two famous leaders were trying to coordinate their attack on Port Hudson and Vicksburg.
The listed author, “Ward Edwards, ‘High Private,’ U. S. V.,” is actually St George Henry Rathborne (December 26, 1854–December 16, 1938), a prolific dime novelist who generally wrote under pseudonyms.
