Number 48 in “The War Library: Original Stories of Adventure in the War for the Union,” a series of dime novels that are set in the midst of actual Civil War battles.
Down in Dixie; or, Adventures of a War Correspondent, A Story of Stoneman’s Raid and Gettysburg, originally published August 11, 1883, takes place during Stoneman’s Raid in April of 1863, and during the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1–3, 1863, arguably the best-known battle of the Civil War... and the battle with the most casualties... and the battle considered to be the turning point of the war.
For this War Library entry the author is not a military man but, ostensibly at least, a journalist covering the war for a New York newspaper—but not a journalist as we are used to seeing them in the 21st century: this journalist got on a horse and accompanied the cavalry on Stoneman’s Raid into the heart of Dixie! He was even armed!
