Dime novel, Age of Sail

Author: Robert Phillipse

The Cruiser of the Chesapeake; or, The Pride of the Nansemond is No. 74 of the Beadle’s Dime Novels series.  The story takes place during the American Revolution, the hero being a “privateer” for the American colonies—or “pirate” in the eyes of the British—named Alberto Nansemond who captures a British war-ship and renames it The Pride of the Nansemond after his daughter.  With the two war-ships now under his control he then proceeds to rescue various American patriots imprisoned by the British general in charge of Baltimore, including his own father.

About the author, “Lieut. Robert Phillipse, U. S. N.,” absolutely nothing is known other than that some of his work was also credited to Charles Wentworth, suggesting they are the same person and that one name at least must have been a pen name.
