Published June 24, 1884, fourteen years after Dumas’s death, as one in a series of dime novels called the “The Seaside Library” by New York publisher George Munro, this digital edition of The Bride of Monte-Cristo: A Sequel to “The Count of Monte-Cristo” purports to be written by Alexander Dumas—which may or may not be the misspelled original author of The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas, himself; or it might have been a dime novel publisher’s attempt to profit by a famous author’s name.
Regardless, this is a well-written, entertaining sequel, utilizing the same cast of characters, employing a similar style of writing and presentation as the original, and overall giving readers who finish The Count of Monte Cristo with unsatisfied curiosity about what would happen next to these fascinating characters (a common reaction by people who love Dumas’s novel), the satisfaction they crave.
