Originally published in the 1870s as a dime novel and then re-published in 1908 as a nickel weekly, The War Tiger of the Modocs is number 6 of the beloved Beadle’s Frontier Series.  This particular issue tells a story set in the 1860s or 1870s during the early days of American settlement in California, at a time when the Modoc people, although ostensibly defeated and confined to reservations, still ran wild at times as they resisted with all their considerable capabilities further encroachment by European newcomers seeking gold and silver.  The Modoc chief Captain Jack, a major character in this story, was a real person.

Number 7 of Beadle’s Frontier Series, The Red Modocs, is a sequel to this one, involving many of the same characters and providing the reader with an historically accurate conclusion to Captain Jack’s brief but violent “Modoc War.”

At more than 31,000 words, this work of fiction, besides being an interesting and fun read, gives the reader a taste of what the masses were reading in the late 19th and early 20th century time period.
