Originally published in the 1870s as a dime novel and then re-published in 1908 as a nickel weekly, The Forest Avenger is number 12 of the beloved Beadle’s Frontier Series.

This particular issue tells a tale about settlers in late-18th-century Kentucky—when Kentucky was still called the “Dark and Bloody Ground” because of all the warfare between Indians and settlers, and between the various Indian tribes themselves.  In this case, an entire village of settlers is captured at one fell swoop and marched to the Indians’ village where most of them will be burned at the stake, unless Scar-Face, the Avenger, can somehow rescue them.

At a little more than 27,000 words, this work of fiction, besides being an interesting and fun read, gives the reader a taste of what the masses were reading in the late 19th and early 20th century time period.
